Gilbert has never taken a bath -- only showers.
Gilbert is a Mermid, but has been hidden away on land for eleven years. When Gilbert returns underwater, he stumbles upon the terrifying truth that others like him are being persecuted -- and no one knows by whom. Gilbert befriends a Leviathan, gets swallowed by a whale, and discovers the horrible secret in the original Statue of Liberty -- but the danger to both worlds grows greater with every day that passes. Guided by a mysterious age-old text, Gilbert unravels an incredible destiny that has been waiting for him... but the pieces have fallen into the wrong hands. Gilbert just has one of those faces that you can't remember even if you tried. Gilbert might as well not exist -- but good thing he does.

Wow. I can't believe I am the first reviewer! This book would definitely give Harry Potter a run for its money.
Before you jump all over me, I'm a Harry Potter fan too! But the world created in Gilbert and the Scepter of Silence is incredible, thoughtful, and very detailed. From the clothes they wear to the logistics of the buildings and food - it's almost impossible to believe that the place isn't real. The authors really pioneered the path for stories that take place underwater, heck, for stories about mermaids. The term is completely reinvented. It's all about Mermids now and I have no doubt that this word will be whispered amongst people for the next 20 years just as "wizard" has become a phenomenon.

The plot-line takes so many twists and turns, this book is the master of suspense! The problems are solved in clever ways by Gilbert and his friends. The best part is that it's a breeze to read, so even my middle school nieces and my 9 year old nephew can enjoy this awesome novel. The characters are hilarious to the point where I laughed out loud on the subway (don't judge me!). The authors have done a fantastic job integrating morals and allusions to society, that maybe kids wouldn't pick up, but an adult certainly would.

I also like the hand-drawn cover art for this book.

All in all, I highly recommend Gilbert and the Scepter of Silence to anyone. But if you have children, this would be the perfect book to pick up as a gift. I gave it 5 stars. This book has earned the right to sit on my top shelf!

got as gift for little cousin. thumbs up
For the record, I'm using my wife's account for this review.

Just received a copy of this incredible novel yesterday and I could hardly wait to start reading it. My daughter was just as anxious to get started, but she'll have to wait her turn. )

As another reviewer has mentioned, the beauty of the cover art is the first thing you notice. And the matte finish of the cover paper feels like velvet. It's smoother than a baby's bottom. )

Before the book came out I was interested in getting a digital copy. Words to the wise, get the hard copy or both. You will love the details and vivid colors of the cover. And to reiterate another point, the illustrations throughout the book are terrific.

The details used in describing both scenes and characters are superb. It makes it easy to visualize everything in the story. And the character traits remind you of people you know or have met. It's amazing that these young authors have been able to capture the subtle nature of children and adults and put them into details that bring their characters to life.

I've only gotten through chapter three so far and the action is nonstop. There are so many funny and exciting things happening that you'll hate to put the book down. And even when you do, you'll keep thinking about all that happened for a while thereafter.

This is an amazing, fun-filled and exciting novel for young and old alike. Do yourself or your children a favor and get it. You'll be glad you did.
First off, I have a hard copy not the ebook.

My first impressions when I got 'Gilbert and the Scepter of Silence' (#GATSOS) in my hand The book looked expensive and classy. The combination of the cover art and the matte cover was really nice as I prefer matte cover over glossy, plastic covers. When I flipped through the book, the first thing I noticed was the chapter drawings. Just like the cover art, hand-drawn chapter drawings perfectly fit into the book. I really liked those drawings, not too heavy, not too light.

Second thing I noticed was the chapter titles. They were cleverly worded and fun. For example, the title of the chapter ten is 'Tend to the Captives' and this goes on in for each of the 22 chapters.

After Reading I really enjoyed this book. The authors created a magnificent and magical new world. The best part is that I was discovering this world along side Gilbert who was new to it as well. This book has all the suspense and plot twists that make a story a page-turner. But the best part is that this is a book that the whole family can enjoy reading, something rare these days.

Warning If you read #GATSOS in public, you are in danger of embarrassing yourself. Some parts of this book are so funny, you will burst into a spontaneous laughter.
I've read many fantasy fiction novels by the likes of Tolkien, Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, etc. And I must say, I was very impressed with this novel.

I was surprised authors this young could be so imaginative. The way all the story lines came together was remarkable. And the play on words, humor and detailed character development was amazing. You'll find yourself excited by the new world you'll discover and delighted by the characters you come to know.

The authors and illustrator did a marvelous job throughout the novel. It was an exciting read from start to finish. It will have you fully satisfied in the completeness of the story. But you'll also long for more. )

Highly Recommended!!!!
This book is a flawless combination of fantasy, adventure, and fairy tale. It is chock full of humor and was a delightful read.
I loved this book. In some ways it is an underwater Harry Potter without magic. Instead of magic, science comes into heavy play (I want a vesicle). There is a little magic, but only a very small amount. Something else that I really loved were the illustrations. I've already recommended this to several people, including a lady in a hospital that I got to talking about books with.
